Oily Scalp? A Clarifying Neem Routine
Use neem leaf powder as a scalp mask before you wash: a slightly loose paste mainly at the roots for 15–30 minutes, rinsed out thoroughly, up to twice a week. Roots usually feel lighter and fresher; it doesn't treat dandruff or grow hair.
The short answer: for an oily scalp, use neem leaf powder as a scalp mask before you wash. Mix 1–2 tablespoons with warm water into a slightly loose paste, apply it along your partings, mainly at the roots, leave it 15–20 minutes the first time (30 at most), then rinse very thoroughly and condition your lengths if they need it. Use it up to twice a week. Roots usually feel lighter and fresher afterwards; it isn't a treatment for dandruff and it doesn't make hair grow.
Is neem good for your hair and scalp?
It's most useful on the scalp. A neem paste lifts excess oil, everyday residue and the coated feeling left by oiling or styling products, and loose flakes rinse away with them, so your roots usually feel lighter and your scalp fresh. It isn't a conditioner: neem can leave dry lengths feeling rough, which is why this routine keeps it mainly at the roots. It isn't a shampoo either, so very heavy oil or styling product may still need a wash afterwards.
- Oily roots, dry ends: scalp and roots only.
- Curly, coily, porous or bleached hair: scalp only, a shorter time, and conditioner on your lengths.
- Fine hair: a modest amount, rinsed carefully, so no powder is left to weigh your roots down.
- A dry or flaky-feeling scalp: a thinner paste, a shorter time, the Aloe Vera Powder mix below, and less often.
On your face, neem works as a separate weekly mask; how to use neem powder on your face covers it, including why it always goes on as a wet paste.
How to use neem powder on your hair and scalp
- Mix 1–2 tablespoons of Spierb Neem Powder, or enough for your scalp, with warm water added a little at a time, until you have a smooth, slightly loose paste.
- Part your hair and apply the paste with your fingertips along each parting, mainly on the scalp and roots. Massage lightly: it's a soft paste, not a gritty scalp scrub, so there's no need to rub hard.
- Leave it 15–20 minutes the first time; you can go up to 30 if your scalp stays comfortable, but use the shorter end if your scalp or hair feels dry. Don't let it dry hard.
- Rinse very thoroughly in sections, with your head tilted back so the rinse water runs away from your eyes. If any gets in your eyes, rinse them with plenty of clean water.
- Wash and condition if you need to. If your roots still feel oily, wash now with your usual wash or a Shikakai or Aritha wash, never with neem mixed in, then condition your lengths.
For a softer paste, mix 2 tablespoons of neem with 1 tablespoon of Aloe Vera Powder and warm water to a runny-yogurt consistency, let it rest 10 minutes and leave it on for 15–20 minutes. For a fuller hair mask, mix 1 tablespoon of neem with 2 tablespoons of Amla, Bhringraj or Brahmi and leave it 15–20 minutes. Mix only what you'll use and throw away leftovers.
Can I apply neem leaves directly on my hair?
Not as dry powder: mix it with warm water into a paste first. This routine uses dried neem leaf powder, not whole or fresh leaves; dry powder rubbed onto your scalp doesn't spread, is hard to rinse out, and the fine dust is easy to breathe in.
Can I leave neem water on my hair overnight?
No. Neem is a rinse-off mask, and Spierb doesn't give a recipe for neem water or a leave-in spray. Plant powder mixed with water has no preservative, so it can spoil quickly, even in the fridge, and leaving it on for hours dries your scalp, leaves residue and gives no extra benefit. Use the paste above for 15–30 minutes and rinse it out.
What are the disadvantages of neem on hair?
Used too often, too thickly or for too long, neem can leave your scalp dry or tight and your lengths rough or tangled, and powder that isn't fully rinsed out makes hair look dull. It has a strong natural smell, and like any plant powder it can irritate some people. The wider list is on the neem page.
Patch test the exact mix 24–48 hours before first use. Don't go ahead if the skin burns, swells, blisters or turns red, or if it itches and the itch doesn't settle. A patch test can't rule out a reaction later. Don't use it on a broken, sunburned or irritated scalp, and rinse it out and stop if your scalp burns, swells or comes up in a rash. Call 911 if your face, lips or eyes swell or you have trouble breathing; see a doctor or pharmacist if a reaction spreads or keeps getting worse, or if an eye still hurts, stays red or your vision is blurred after rinsing.
How often should you use neem on your scalp?
Up to twice a week. If your scalp already feels clean and comfortable, there's no need to use it more. Tightness, dryness, roughness or itching after a neem mask mean it's too much: use it less often, for a shorter time or with Aloe Vera Powder, or stop if it keeps happening.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is neem powder good for dandruff?
No. Neem leaf powder isn't a treatment for dandruff and doesn't cure or control it. As a scalp mask, it rinses away surface oil and everyday residue, and loose flakes go with them, so your scalp can look cleaner for a while. Flaking that's heavy, keeps coming back or comes with a red, sore scalp has its own causes, and a stronger neem mask won't fix it.
Does neem grow your hair?
No. Neem doesn't make hair grow or grow back, and it doesn't stop hair falling from the root. Its job is a clean, fresh scalp: roots without excess oil can look lighter and less flat once dry, which isn't the same as more hair.
Can I spray neem water on my hair every day?
No. Neem mixed with water has no preservative and can spoil quickly, and used daily it tends to dry your scalp. Use the rinse-off scalp mask instead, up to twice a week.
Is neem good for an itchy scalp?
No. Neem isn't a remedy for an itchy scalp, and it doesn't settle itching. As a rinse-off scalp mask it lifts oil and everyday residue, so your scalp usually feels cleaner afterwards. If your scalp is dry, a neem mask can leave it tighter and itchier: shorten the time, use the Aloe Vera Powder mix or skip it. Patch test the exact mix 24–48 hours before first use, and rinse it out and stop using it if your scalp burns, swells, comes up in a rash or keeps itching after a neem mask.
