Fix it
Shikakai Side Effects: Dry, Rough Hair and Hard-Water Residue, and How to Fix Them
Shikakai can leave hair dry, rough or tangled when the wash is too strong, stays on too long or isn't rinsed out, and hard water can leave it feeling coated. A thinner wash, mainly on your scalp, 3–5 minutes, a longer rinse and conditioner usually fix it.
The short answer: Shikakai can leave hair dry, rough or tangled when the wash is too strong, stays on too long, dries on your hair or isn't rinsed out, and hard water can leave it feeling coated. The fix is a thinner wash, mainly on your scalp, 3–5 minutes, a longer rinse and conditioner on your lengths.
What are the disadvantages of using Shikakai?
Next to a bottled shampoo, Shikakai takes more mixing and rinsing, the lather is light and varies, fine powder can stay in your hair, and the wash stings if it reaches your eyes. The side effects people run into are:
- Dry, rough or squeaky hair: the wash took off more oil than your lengths could spare.
- Tangles: dryness, leftover powder and rubbing the wash through your lengths all add friction.
- A dull or gritty film: powder left behind, or hard-water minerals.
- An itchy or tight scalp: from a strong mix, washing too often, residue or a reaction in a sensitive scalp. Itchy or dry scalp after Shikakai covers that.
Does Shikakai powder dry out hair?
It can, even though it's the gentler wash. The usual causes are too much powder, too little water, leaving it on longer than 3–5 minutes, letting it dry on your hair, washing too often, or a lot of Aritha in a blend. Dry, porous, bleached or curly hair feels it first. If your hair feels like straw, it's usually this, plus friction while you detangle.
Does Shikakai leave residue in hard water?
It can be harder to rinse cleanly in hard water, and hard water leaves its own minerals on hair, so a coated, dull feel isn't always leftover Shikakai. Start with what you can change: make the wash thinner, or strain it through muslin, and rinse for longer. If your hair still feels coated after a careful rinse, minerals are the likely cause, and a dedicated chelating shampoo deals with those; a stronger Shikakai wash won't.
How to fix dry, rough hair after Shikakai
- Re-wet your hair and rinse it section by section until no grit is left.
- Condition your lengths, then detangle gently once most of the powder is out.
- Next wash, make it thinner: less powder, more water, like runny yogurt.
- Keep it on your scalp, massage for 60–90 seconds and let the runoff clean your lengths.
- Keep to 3–5 minutes and rinse before it dries, head tilted back. If any gets in your eyes, rinse them straight away with plenty of clean water and don't rub them.
- Space your washes out: up to twice a week, or once if your hair is dry.
If your roots still feel oily after a thin wash, do a second short wash rather than leaving the first one on longer. The full method is in how to use Shikakai powder for hair.
When to stop
Rinse it off and stop using Shikakai if your scalp burns, swells, blisters or comes up in a rash, or if itching keeps coming back. If your face, lips or eyes swell or you have trouble breathing, call 911.
If you're starting again after dryness alone, or adding something new to the mix, patch test 24–48 hours before you use it again, on a small patch of clean, unbroken skin. Don't go ahead if the skin burns, swells, blisters or turns red, or if it itches and the itch doesn't settle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Shikakai make my hair feel like straw?
Usually because the wash dried on your hair or was too strong for your lengths. Keep your hair wet while the wash is on, shorten the time, rinse longer and condition afterwards.
Why doesn't Shikakai wash my hair properly?
If your hair still feels oily, the wash may have been too thin for the amount of oil or product, or it missed parts of your scalp. Do a second short wash, add some Aritha to the mix, or use a shampoo that day.
How long should I leave Shikakai on my hair?
3–5 minutes after a 60–90 second massage; longer mostly dries your hair. How to use Shikakai powder has the steps.
Can Shikakai regrow hair?
No. It's a wash and doesn't make hair grow or regrow. Hair fall after Shikakai explains what it does and doesn't do.
Which is better for hair, shampoo or Shikakai?
It depends on what your hair needs; many people use both. Switching to Shikakai compares them.
